Dr. Ryne Sherman Visited Taiwan

Dr. Ryne Sherman, Chief Scientist at Hogan Assessments, shares insights on personality for ATD APAC 2023, press interview and conversations with clients and Alumni Club members.
It was a pleasure to have Dr. Ryne Sherman, Chief Scientist at Hogan Assessment to speak at the 2023 ATD Asia Pacific Conference in Taipei on October 25th. For his speech “Solving the Problems of Leadership Effectiveness,” the full attendance and the lingering audience with questions (including other speakers at the conference too) even at the Meet the Master session later was enough proof of how relevant the issue is.
Ryne really struck a chord when he raised the question: with all the studies on leadership and books of CEOs boasting their success stories, why are most of the employees still feel disenchanted and disengaged?
One of the key answers is the wrong definition of leadership – our tendency to see someone with a leadership role as a leader rather than evaluating his or her ability to build and maintain a team while leading the team with inspiring visions at the same time.
And another important of an effective leadership is to have the strategic awareness of their strengths and weaknesses and to know when to act opposite of their natural behaviors to achieve the desired outcomes. In other words, welcome to the age of versatile leadership.
Dr. Sherman went on to show the audience what Hogan is best at – data on personality and how personality data helps to predict ineffectiveness. Personality predicts ways one goes out of bound and overexpands the strengths. It helps the person to build that awareness. And that strategic awareness would be the starting point of effective leadership.
Although only a two-day trip, Ryne’s schedule was fully packed, including visits to key customers in Taiwan, a press interview, and a private session with Hogan Alumni Club members. One of the key clients even prepared a special surprise gift for him!
Ryne delivered a special talk for the Hogan Alumni Club’s certified alumni. In addition to the highlights of his earlier speech, he also shared insights on impact of artificial intelligence to assessment tools in the industry, common personality profiles of working adults based on Hogan’s personality data, and correlation between these profiles and 18 functions of DDI and Hogan 360 through collaboration with DDI.
With pocket full of data and science, or rather, a laptop filled with all the latest research, Dr. Sherman and his team at Hogan obviously enjoy searching for correlations and connections in everything about personality (at least 40 criterion studies every year!). So, when he was asked about the common personality profile of HR leaders in an interview with CommonWealth magazine group, his response seemed so instinctive and so natural: Yes, we did a study on that. Well, why are we not surprised? By the way, that study he co-authored was published in Talent Quarterly in 2021 ; “Who Becomes An HR Leader?”
The busy schedule did not leave Dr. Sherman much time for getting to know the city. Our team visited Taipei 101 with him for a quick view of beautiful Taipei. And the participants for his webinars later that night were able to see the nighttime lit-up version of this tallest building in Taiwan as the background on his screen.
